GENA 2009 Lesson Plan: What's Living in My Soil?

Description

Microorganisms and bacteria especially, make up the majority of organisms found on
earth. The vast diversity of these organisms is still being discovered and studied. By collecting soil samples from around the school grounds and having students isolate an individual bacterial colony, run a PCR reaction to amplify the 16s rRNA subunit, sequence, BLAST and then run a ClustalW alignment, students will have a better understanding of the diversity of living
organisms at all levels.
